GeneBee is the Russian EMBnet Node

GeneBee is the national bioinformatic facility for Russian Scientists. As EMBnet node it became operational in 1996. The functions of GeneBee are the following:

  • providing access to the latest releases of the molecular biology databases (EMBL, SWISS-PROT, TrEMBL, PDB, Prosite);
  • providing access to molecular biology software (GCG, WhatIf, home-made software);
  • development of new biocomputing software in the field of biopolymer sequence analysis and protein 3D-structure analysis;
  • user training in the field of biocomputing.

GeneBee provides molecular biology databases and software facilities for over 90 departments and laboratories within Russian Federation.

The resources that are allocated to GeneBee site are:

  • SGI Indy computer (IRIX5.3) with 32 GB of disk attached;
  • Cluster of PC's under Linux.

Main sources of funding:

  1. RFBR (Russian Foundation for Basic Research);
  2. Moscow State University
